Oily and FUN DIY’s

Good Morning! This month I co-hosted an oil education class with some oily friends. We each gave some of our favorite Oily DIY recipes. Today I’m sharing them with you on here!

The amazing thing abut DIY home and personal care products is you know EXACTLY what you are using in yur home and on your family! This is so important to me because of the recent research linking a slew of chemicals and environmental factors like plastics and synthetic fragrance to hormones disruptors and immune system disruptors.

In 1976, Congress passed the Toxic Substance Control Act (TSCA) which grandfather in between 63,000 – 100,000 chemicals that were on the market. These chemicals were grandfathered in, without any testing, and are simply unregulated. Today, only about 50% of the chemicals on the market have been subject to any chemical testing at all. Under this act, manufacturers are protected by trade secret laws, so that they do not even have to post what ingredients are in their products. If you go look at a bottle of household cleaner, you may be surprised to see that they only list a small percentage of the ingredients in the bottle. Under the TSCA, manufacturers are protected by trade secrets laws that allow them to keep their ingredient lists a secret.

So this is why I DIY! This is also why I have been continually growing my oil collection. My oil collection is full of oils that I can use for all sorts of easy and safe DIY cleaners, soaps, lotions, creams and even bath salts. Oils help me add a natural fragrance to my DIY’s and because I use Young Living Oils, I also get the benefit of adding therapeutic properties like immune, skin and hormone support! Having a collection keeps the ingredients at my finger tips and with just a few other ingredients on hand, these DIY’s are so simple!

SO without further ado, here are the our top 10 OILY DIY’s

Lip Balm

We use lip balm daily in the winter time! This recipes is so easy and nourishing with the ingredients you’ll use!

You’ll Need:

1 part beeswax (example- 1 tablespoon)

2 parts cocoa butter (example-2 tablespoons) Note: Shea Butter or Mango butter will also work

2 parts coconut oil (example-2 tablespoons)

20 drops of essential oil of choice (or more or less to your preference) I use 20+ drops of peppermint essential oil for a cooling and refreshing lip chap.

DIY Instructions

Put about an inch of water in the bottom of a small pan and turn on medium heat.

Place a small (pint size or smaller) jar in the water, being careful not to get in water inside the jar.

Place all ingredients except the essential oils inside the glass jar and slowly melt, making sure not to get any water in jar. I use 2 tablespoons each of the butter(s) and coconut oil and 1 tablespoons of beeswax. This fills about 18 tubes.

When all ingredients are melted, stir well and turn off heat, but leave jar in the water to keep warm.

Stir in the essential oils.

Use a glass dropper to quickly fill the containers. I leave the jar in the water but turn off the heat to keep the ingredients liquid while I do this.

The mixture will settle slightly as it cools, so I also re-top the containers after about 2 minutes as they start to harden.

Let sit without touching for several hours or until completely hardened.

Store in a cool dry place (they will last for at least a year if stored correctly).

Dry Shampoo

This Dry Shampoo hack is amazingly similar to using store bought shampoo minus the chemicals!!

What You’ll Need:

-1/4 cup of corn starch

-1 tablespoon of baking soda

-2 drops of Cedarwood Essential Oil

-2 drops of Rosemary Essential Oil

-1 drop of Tea Tree Essential Oil

Optional: 2 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder, for dark hair

Mix all ingredients, in a glass container.

Sprinkle on roots and let absorb, into hair for 2-3 minutes.

Brush through hair

Why Cedarwood, Rosemary and Tea Tree oils?

-Rosemary and Cedarwood help with dry, itchy scalp and dandruff

-Tea Tree oil helps to unclog hair follicles and nourish roots

Eyelash and Brow Serum

I have been using this mainly on my lashes for the past few months and I can see lots of and lots of new lashes that have grown in since. They are clearly shorter than my other lashes.

What You’ll Need:

10 drops YLEO Cedarwood with 10 drops YLEO Lavender.

Organic Castor oil. (I purchased this one that came with the tube already filled and then a dropper bottle. This stuff lasts FOREVER!)

I apply each night before bed, but you can apply in the am as well.

Vitality Oil Infused Cooking Salts

For a super quick and easy gift you can share with neighbors or give as party favors, consider oil-infused cooking salts!

What You’ll Need:

– Simply mix 2 tablespoons of sea salt or Himalayan pink salt to 1-2 drops of essential oil (try Basil, Rosemary, or Thyme Vitality!).

– Mix well and allow to dry spread in a single layer on a cookie sheet.

– If desired, add 1 tablespoon of the dried herb from your spice jars for even more flavor and a beautiful presentation.

– Get some small mason jars, fill them with the prepared salt, and have fun decorating and labeling them.

Infused Sugar

This little oily hack is great for when you’re down to your last few drops of oil! There’s so many uses for oil infused sugar! Stir cinnamon, thieves or nutmeg sugar into coffee for a sweet treat, rim your cocktail glass with lemon, lime, lavender or grapefruit sugar for a special touch! Sounds fancy, right? Spoiler alert, it’s SO simple!!

You’ll need:

1 cup white sugar

5 drops essential oil of choice

Mix together the sugar & oil together in a bowl. Spread over a plate & let dry overnight. In the morning, break up any chunks that may have formed & put all the sugar into an air tight container. Use as needed!

The options are endless here, & when you’re down to the last few drops of oil, just let the bottle hang out in the sugar overnight! So cute for a housewarming gift!
