I’m gonna be completely honest, I totally cringe at fake fragrant soaps! I avoid it at all costs when we are out in public and I stopped buying my Mrs. Meyers soaps 4 years ago!
Today, I’m sharing my super simple and clean DIY Hand soap recipe along with the reason it’s so important to me to prioritize this one! You’ll see how cost effective it is and how easy it is to make your own!
How to Make Your Own Hand Soap Tutorial:
Greenwashed
When a company markets clean “green” products to you with pretty labels and sneaky wording, but in reality there’s a bunch of chemicals hidden in their ingredients under the word “fragrance” , don’t be fooled! We are smarter than the marketing mamas!
In fact, the EPA found that 75% of the time, there where Phthalates in the ingredient “fragrance”
While we are talking misleading, the F- D- A labeling laws allow brands to say their products are “organic” or “pure” and basically make any claim on their label-as long as that claim is true for just just ONE ingredient!
Many soaps-including “organic” ones rely on synthetic ingredients including “fragrance” and triclosan to defend against harmful bacteria.
These ingredients are not able to be processed out of our bodies easily like a natural ingredients as our bodies are meant to process things found in nature. Our bodies will work hard to process chemicals and if they are continuously used, they can literally build up with each use! Chemical build up over time can cause hormone and immune system distruptions!
Basically they weaken our bodies every time we use them!
Seventh Generation, Tom’s, Burt’s Bees and Method have all been bought out by Unilever, Colgate, Clorox and SC Johnson respectively. This means these once “healthier” options are now under the control of big box-for profit companies.
Not to mention that Mrs. Meyers was also bought out by SC Johnson and whose handsoap includes the ingredient “fragrance” .
Fragrance is code for a “signature scent” in labeling laws that companies do not need to disclose the ingredients of due to “ trade secrets”.
In other words, that’s where they hide the chemicals they do not want us savvy consumers who read labels knowing about!
SC Johnson: owns METHOD, Mrs. Meyers, babyganics, and are also under a class action lawsuit for NOT being all natural but have advertised their products as such!

A Better Option

We pay a huge health price for convenience and there are so many things that we can so easily do ourselves.

One thing I noticed when I got YL oils, is that their oils smell SO pure and EXACTLY like the plants themselves! So when I make my own soaps, they don’t smell alcohol-y, chemically, perfume-y or super sweet! l smell real lavender and Cloves! YUMMM
DIY-ing is SUCH a cheaper alternative to store-bought brands, and you can change up the essential oils in this recipe to customize your scent and create seasonal blends! For instance, you’ll love Lavender and Basil in the spring because it reminds me of spring flowers. In the fall, try Thieves and Orange essential oils for a pumpkin spice scent.
My recipe for DIY Foaming Handsoap
What you’ll need:
1-8 ounce Foaming Soap Bottles
2 ounces Unscented Castile soap
10-20 drops of Oils!

• Liquid castile Soap is a coconut-based soap that is non-toxic and non-irritating to the skin. It’s gentle enough to use on baby’s skin, yet great for cleaning skin naturally. Be sure to get unscented because, you guesses it-if it’s scented, it’s most likely the ingredient “fragrance” or a fragrance grade oil (made just for smell-so no priority on quality)
• Essential oils are used as a natural fragrance in this recipe and help to soothe and moisturize the skin as well as work their plant magic!
For example, The Thieves blend was inspired by the legend of four 15th-century French thieves who formulated and wore a special aromatic combination of clove, rosemary, and other botanicals that they believed provided protection while they were stealing. French authorities recognized that there was such value in this mixture that upon the thieves’ capture, they received a more merciful punishment on condition that they divulge the ingredients in their secret formula.
Pretty cool, right? You will use this oil during the school months to create an immune supporting hand soap!
Instructions
- Fill dispenser 1/4 way with castile soap.
- Add 10-20 drops of essential oils.
- Pour water to fill within 1″ of the top of the dispenser.
- Replace the pump lid.
- Dispense soap as needed. Use and enjoy!
Thieves Foaming Hand Soap
For the non DIY-er pre-made soaps from Young Living are great alternative to chemical-based soaps. They are gentle enough to be used regularly without drying or striping the skin of it’s natural oils and do not remove healthy bacteria like an antibacterial soap would.
